Back-to-School WorkshopPurpose: To provide information, encouragement, and support to new and veteran homeschooling families. Description: This workshop is a day packed with various sessions to meet the differing needs and challenges that homeschool families encounter. Hear from experienced homeschoolers and interact with informative panel discussions, meet new friends, and share tips and techniques. Some topics to be covered are, home organization, curriculums, lesson planning, record keeping and much, much more. Target group: All SCCHE parents and visitors are welcome to attend and participate. Schedule: Mid-August Guidelines: There is no babysitting, and we ask that all children, but nursing babies, stay at home. This event is open to non-SCCHE members. Interviews for membership will be conducted at this event. A fee is charged which includes snacks and lunch. Curriculum Sale-UsedPurpose: For SCCHE members to sell their used homeschooling materials. Description: This is a time set aside for SCCHE members to sell used curriculum that they are unable to use. Target group: Only SCCHE members may sell, but all SCCHE members and visitors are invited to come and purchase. Schedule: Mid to late May Guidelines: Only SCCHE members will be able to sell their used homeschooling materials, but all interested buyers may attend. DirectoryPurpose: To provide addresses and phone numbers of members for the use of other members only. Description: The directory will be published around the first week in October. It is to be distributed to all members of SCCHE who choose to be included in the directory. The directory is not to be given to anyone outside the group. Updates and corrections will be sent out periodically through the newsletter. Target Group: Only SCCHE members are included in the directory. Schedule: Early October. Guidelines: The directory is NOT to be used as a mailing list for any type of advertising and will not be given out to anyone outside SCCHE. We do not sell our mailing list or email list. It is to be used for SCCHE purposes only. Family Fun DayPurpose: To provide opportunities for SCCHE families to fellowship with one other. Description: One or two family-oriented evening events will be planned yearly. Target group: Only SCCHE member families. Schedule: Usually one event in the fall and one event in the spring. Look in your newsletter for details Guidelines: Participating families must register for these events and follow the general field trip guidelines. Field TripsPurpose: To plan and implement quality, educational field trips. Description: Members will determine where they want to go and share in the planning and leadership of the field trips. George Observatory Science ClassesPurpose: To increase our children’s interest and understanding of science, especially relating to astronomy and space. Description: Our children will attend one two hour class per month taught at the George Observatory by the George Observatory staff. Target group: K through 12th grade SCCHE members Schedule: See the newsletter. Guidelines: You are welcome to leave your children during the class. You are also encouraged to enjoy the hiking trails, picnic tables, and play area. See newsletter information or the table at the Parent's Orientation meeting for further information. High School Student CouncilPurpose: A council of high school students committed to the encouragement of spiritual and social growth among the high school students of SCCHE by planning social and service activities that glorify and reflect Jesus Christ. Description: To plan and provide social and service opportunities for the SCCHE student body. Target group: All high school aged students who are members of SCCHE. Schedule: See the newsletter. HMNS Science ClassPurpose: To increase our children’s interest and understanding of science. Description: Our children attend one hour science classes taught at the Houston Museum of Natural Sciences by HMNS staff. Enrollment entitles participants to free admission to the museum on the day of the class. There is a cost for each class. Target group: 1st – 8th grade SCCHE members only Schedule: Classes meet once monthly in October through May. Guidelines: A parent or responsible adult must oversee all participating children. See the newsletter information or the table at the Parents' Orientation Meeting for further information. Introduction to Homeschooling / Outside Class PreviewPurpose: To gather information about the various outside classes offered for homeschooling students and to provide basic information to those new to Home Schooling. Description:Various tutors, Co-Ops, and outside classes will offer information about their services to homeschool families. This is also an opportunity for new homeschoolers or parents that are interested in homeschooling to receive basic information about homeschooling such as: What is homeschooling? Is homeschooling legal in Texas? What about socialization? Am I qualified to teach my own child? What is the Father's role in homeschooling? Where do I obtain my teaching materials? What is a homeschool support group and what are the benefits of joining one? Questions are welcome. Target group: SCCHE members, visitors and Parents new to Home Schooling. Schedule: An evening in April Guidelines: Visitors are welcome to attend. Masterpieces and MusingsPurpose: To encourage the writing and publishing of student works. Description: A copy of one written contribution from each participating student is published in a spiral-bound publication. Target group: Only SCCHE students Schedule: One magazine per year Guidelines: One contribution per student ; see newsletter for additional details, deadlines, and cost. Mix and MinglePurpose: To encourage and further develop relationships between homeschooling families. Description: A variety of informal discussions to communicate practical ideas and helps for homeschoolers. Please send discussion ideas to the director. NewsletterPurpose: To inform SCCHE members of upcoming events and learning opportunities within and outside of SCCHE. Description: This SCCHE member’s only newsletter is published monthly and includes SETHSA monthly newsletter, The Teaching Pioneer. Target group: Only SCCHE members Schedule: Once a month from September through May with one summer publication in July. Guidelines: All articles must be submitted electronically. All articles must be sent to the editor by the 20th of the precedi ng month before the next newsletter. The SCCHE editor reserves the right to reject or edit an entered article. Park DayPurpose: To provide an unstructured, relaxed environment for families to fellowship with one another. Description: An afternoon of simple, unstructured fun at a local park with the opportunity to get to know other homeschooling families. The park us usually equipped with soccer fields, toddler play area, covered pavilion, restrooms, etc. Bring your own games and sports equipment. Target group: SCCHE members, but visitors are welcome to participate. Schedule: First and third Fridays of the month starting in August at a designated park from 1 - 3 pm, see newsletter for details. Guidelines: Parents are NOT ALLOWED to DROP off their children; however, parents can bring children other than their own through pre-arranged details. Parents’ Orientation MeetingPurpose: To familiarize new members with the programs and activities of SCCHE, to explain policy and procedures for the upcoming school year and to provide an opportunity to join SCCHE and sign up for many of the programs that are to be offered. Description: The SCCHE Executive Council will review highlights of the upcoming school year, a guest speaker will be there to address SCCHE, and membership renewals and new member interviews will be held. Also, tables will be setup to share information and sign-up volunteers for all the various activities and programs that SCCHE sponsors. Target group: All SCCHE parents and visitors are encouraged to attend and participate. Schedule: The meeting is usually held in early August each year. Guidelines: NO childcare is provided, so please leave all children except nursing babies at home. Non-members of SC CHE are welcome to participate. Picture DayPurpose: To take individual pictures for the yearbook and to provide members with the opportunity to have professional portraits taken of their children and/or family. Group portraits will be offered. Description: Several different portrait packages are available. Packages are ordered and paid for at the time of the sitting. Students can bring a personal prop for the portrait (optional). Target group: All SCCHE members and affiliated groups. Schedule: See newsletter. Guidelines: Please see the September newsletter for details. Pizza Hut Book-ItPurpose: To motivate students to read. Description: The parent determines individual student goals required to earn free personal pan pizza. Target group: Only SCCHE members in grades K-6 Schedule: October through March. Guidelines: Please see the September newsletter for details. Registering will be by mail. Project FairPurpose: To provide a forum for SCCHE students' projects to be viewed by SCCHE member families and visitors. Description: Individual student projects may be from a subject of the student's choice (i.e. Bible, art, geography, literature or science). Students learn as they work to prepare for the Project Fair, display and share their projects, and see other students' work. A certificate is awarded for work accomplished, but no judging of the projects is done. Individual and group entries are welcomed. Target group: Only SCCHE students may display projects, but visitors are welcome to attend. Schedule: An evening in March Guidelines: Visitors are welcome to attend but may not participate. Projects must be in good taste in keeping with Philippians 4:8. Reservations for participation and attendance are expected. Read to SucceedPurpose: To motivate students to read. Description: Students must read predetermined amount set by the parents to earn free Astroworld/Waterworld tickets. Target group: Only SCCHE members in grades K-6 Schedule: Jan.-Feb. Guidelines: Please see the November newsletter for details. Share NightPurpose: To present a forum in which SCCHE students may perform or make presentations before an audience. Description: This is an evening of talent. Examples of presentations in the past have included: reciting a Bible passage or poem, playing a musical piece, presenting a skit...) This evening is for pleasure with no talent judging being conducted. Target group: Only SCCHE students may participate, but visitors are welcome to attend to view the performance. Schedule: An evening in November. Guidelines: Details of each presentation shall be discussed with the director, who then grants approval. Note: Dance presentations will not be included. Presentations, dress, and/or costumes shall be in good taste and very conservatively modest, respectively, and in keeping with Phil 4:8 which states "Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy - meditate on these things." Also, 1 Thess.4:3-4 which states, "That each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God." In addition, we strictly adhere to the SCCHE Social Functions' guidelines found in this handbook for appropriateness of attire and material. Spelling BeePurpose: To provide opportunity for students to compete in the SCCHE Houston Chronicle Spelling Bee. Description: The SCCHE Spelling Bee winner in January will proceed to the SETHSA Houston Chronicle Spelling Bee in February. The SETHSA winner will then compete in the Houston city-wide Bee. On the same day as our SCCHE Bee, we will also hold a Just for Fun Bee for 1st-3rd grade students. These winners will compete with other 1st-3rd graders at the SETHSA level only. Standardized TestingSCCHE will not provide the Stanford Achievement Testing in a group setting this year. Please see the newsletter for alternate testing resources. S.T.A.R.Purpose: The goal of Shared Talents And Resources (S.T.A.R.) is to provide special classes for the students of SCCHE families that will help meet the social and extracurricular needs of the students. Description: Students take 3 one-hour classes over an eight week period. The classes available each semester vary based on the talents, interests, and resources of the teachers/parents or hired professional teachers. Target group: Only SCCHE members 5 years or older. Schedule: The fall session starts in September, and the spring session starts in January. Classes meet from 1pm to 4pm each Thursday for an eight-week period. The Members' Information packet has more details about STAR. Guidelines: At least one parent in each family participating in STAR must consent to work in some capacity within the STAR program. A reasonably strict dress code and behavior ethic is enforced. Parents and students must sign an agreement to abide by the regulations/discipline guidelines and dress code set for STAR. SCCHE YearbookPurpose: To provide SCCHE with a beautiful, quality remembrance of the school year in yearbook form. Description: Hard bound yearbook with at least 88 pages of memories. Individual portraits of each child as well as high school events, field trips, STAR, park day, co-ops, outclasses, bible studies, literature clubs, and other fun things that depict home schooling. Target group: SCCHE high school students (Mature 7th and 8th graders, with parent, also welcome) Schedule: Throughout the school year pictures should be taken by participants and parents then submitted to the yearbook staff with captions. After compilation and printing, the yearbook will be available to pick up at Parents Orientation Meeting and several other functions during the year.
